I Almost Oversold My First Big Order (And How I Fixed It)

The Day Everything Went Wrong

Week two of my candle business. I'd just listed my bestseller - a vanilla lavender blend - on both Shopify and Etsy. I had 5 in stock. Enough to keep my shop going while I made more.

Then it happened.

Shopify: 1 order for the vanilla lavender.

I update my stock. 4 left.

Ten minutes later, Etsy: 2 orders for the same candle.

I have 4 candles. I just sold 3. That's actually fine... except I haven't updated Shopify yet. Someone could order from Shopify right now and I won't have it.

I frantically update both platforms. My heart sinks when I realize: I was 30 minutes away from overselling by 2 units.

The Overselling Trap (And Why It's Not Your Fault)

Here's the thing about selling on multiple platforms: they don't talk to each other.

When you sell a candle on Shopify, Etsy has no idea. You have to go into each platform manually and update the stock number. But while you're updating Etsy, someone might be buying from Shopify. And by the time you update Shopify's inventory, you're already oversold.
